This is my cool t-shirt that i made for one of my gigs, but I thought that I would share it with everyone ;-)
This recital, which is part of the Aberdeenshire-wide Sound festival, was originally going to be performed by Robert Fabbriciani. I don't know much about the flute, but I have been reliably informed that he is one of the foremost flautists of his generation. It's a shame that he couldn't make it along to the recital in Zeste, but RSAMD graduate Richard Craig gave an amazing performance.
Richard himself is greatly inspired by Roberto Fabbriciani, and his legacy of greatly expanding the musical repertoire for flautists. Roberto has done this by having close musical exchanges with composers, who have often made new music specifically for Roberto. Richard's recital was filled with pieces that were a result of a direct influence by roberto, or were inspired by his performances.
I personally feel that of all the instruments in the orchestra, I think that the flute suffers from the worst stereotypes being forced upon it.
A lot of people think of the flute as being very light and pretty, and simply not capable of sounding strong, powerful or musically versatile. Such was the skill of Richard Craig at this recital, he showed everyone there just what the flute could do, and produced nuances and sounds that I didn't think were possible.
The first thing I did after the recital was over was to look at the scores. When pieces are very complicated, the scores will not mean anything to people who are not experienced musicians, but they are pretty in themselves. I wanted to take a copy of part of the score to show people how frantic and beautiful the score was, but I don't want to get sued for copyright infringement :-)
Well done Richard, I will look forward to hearing you again, and you can startle me some more with your strange other-wordly sounds.
